How to Grow Bright Lights Swiss Chard
Swiss Chard is an easy-to-grow, resilient vegetable that thrives in both garden beds and containers. Follow these simple steps for a successful harvest:
Timing: Direct sow outdoors from mid-spring until late summer. For an early start, seed indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost.Planting Depth: Plant seeds ½ inch (12mm) deep.Spacing: Space seeds 1–2 inches apart. Once seedlings emerge, thin them to 6–12 inches apart. (Shopify Tip: You can identify the stalk colors during thinning to group your favorite hues together!)Soil Requirements: Prefers rich, well-draining soil with a neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Keep the soil consistently moist for the tenderest stalks.Sunlight: Thrives in Full Sun but will tolerate Partial Shade (especially in hot summer climates).Companion Planting: Grows exceptionally well alongside bush beans, brassicas (broccoli, kale), onions, and radishes. Avoid planting near beets or spinach.
Harvesting Tips
Baby Greens: Harvest outer leaves when they reach 3–4 inches tall (around 30 days) for salads.Mature Harvest: Cut individual outer stalks at the base when they reach full size (around 55 days). The plant will continue to produce new leaves from the center for a continuous, all-season harvest.
