Vates Blue Curled Scotch is a premier heirloom variety distinguished by its tight, finely ruffled blue-green foliage. It is specifically bred for resilience, offering a compact growth habit that resists yellowing in the heat and stands firm against heavy winds. This variety is celebrated for its remarkable cold hardiness; while many greens fade in the autumn, this kale thrives, utilizing cool temperatures to convert starches into sugars for a noticeably sweeter, more tender flavor.
Days to Mature 55–60 days for mature leaves (Baby greens may be harvested at 30 days)
Height 30–35 cm (12–14 inches)
Spread 30–60 cm (12–24 inches)
Growth Habit and Conditions
This kale follows a compact, upright, and non-heading growth pattern. Low-to-the-ground stature makes it an ideal selection for gardeners using containers, raised beds, or areas prone to high winds where taller "Tree" kales might topple. For optimal development, provide a location with 6+ hours of direct sunlight. It requires nutrient-dense, well-draining soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Maintain steady soil moisture to prevent the leaves from becoming tough, especially when ambient temperatures stay within the preferred range of 7°C to 24°C.
Planting and Care
For maximum vigor, direct sow seeds at a depth of 6 mm (1/4 inch). Spring crops should be started 4 weeks before the last anticipated frost. For a sustained autumn and winter supply, sow seeds in late summer. Space individual plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart to prevent powdery mildew and allow the decorative leaves to fully expand. A thick layer of organic mulch at the base of the stems will regulate soil temperature and conserve the moisture necessary for rapid leaf production.
Harvest Tips
This is a high-yielding "cut-and-come-again" variety. Harvest the small, 7–10 cm (3–4 inch) leaves for a mild addition to salads, or allow the plant to reach full size for sautéing and kale chips. Always harvest the oldest leaves from the bottom of the stalk first. Crucially, leave the central growing point (the terminal bud) intact so the plant can continue to generate new growth from the center. While the leaves are edible at any time, the highest quality harvest occurs after the first frost of the season.
