Seed Packet Essentials
Botanical Name: Cucurbita pepo
Days to Maturity: 100+ days, 12+/- Seeds per packet
Fruit Weight: 20 – 30 lbs on average.
Planting Depth: 1 inch deep.
Growth Habit: Vigorous trailing vines (require plenty of space).
Cultivation & Care Instructions
Howdens are hardy and reliable, but they are heavy feeders that love the heat of the summer.
Sowing Strategy: Plant outdoors only after the soil has thoroughly warmed (at least 21°C). In shorter seasons, start indoors 3 weeks before the last frost in peat pots to avoid root disturbance.
The "Hill" Method: Plant in "hills" (mounds of soil) spaced 6 – 8 feet apart. Sow 4–5 seeds per hill, then thin to the strongest 2 plants.
Watering Needs: Consistent moisture is vital, especially during fruit set. Water at the base of the plant to keep foliage dry and prevent powdery mildew.
Feeding: Mix plenty of compost or aged manure into the site before planting. Use a balanced fertilizer throughout the growing season.
