The Danish Ballhead is a legendary heirloom variety that has been a garden staple since the late 1800s. Known for its remarkable reliability and rock-solid heads, this cabbage is the gold standard for winter storage and homemade sauerkraut. It produces large, round, blue-green heads that typically reach 5 to 7 pounds, offering a crisp texture and a mild, sweet flavor that actually improves after a light frost.

This variety is prized for its heat tolerance and resistance to bolting, making it easier to grow than many other cabbage types. It is a long-season producer, reaching maturity approximately 100 days after transplanting. Each packet contains a generous amount of seeds to get your garden started. For the best results, start seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost, or sow them directly in the garden in late summer for a fall harvest.

Plant the seeds 1/4 inch deep and space the plants 18 to 24 inches apart in rows. Danish Ballhead thrives in full sun and rich, moist soil with plenty of organic matter. Harvest the heads once they feel firm and solid to the touch. Because of its tight leaf structure, this cabbage will keep in a cool cellar or refrigerator for months, allowing you to enjoy your garden harvest well into the winter.
