Luffa Gourd

Luffa Gourd – Open-Pollinated, Non-Treated Seeds, Non GMO

Grow your own natural sponges with Luffa Gourd (Luffa aegyptiaca)! This vigorous vining plant produces long, green gourds that can be harvested young for delicious, tender vegetables or left to mature into fibrous, all-natural sponges. A warm-season crop, luffa thrives in full sun and needs a long growing season.

Growing Information:

  • Days to Maturity: 120–150 days
  • Plant Type: Annual vine
  • Sun: Full sun
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil
  • Spacing: 24–36 inches apart
  • Trellis Support: Recommended for straight, uniform gourds
  • Watering: Consistent moisture; avoid water logging

How to Grow:

  1. Start Indoors: In short-season climates, start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost. Chip and Soak seeds for 24 hours before planting for better germination. Warm germination works best. On a heat mat if possible.
  2. Transplant Outdoors: Move seedlings outside when temperatures are consistently above 15°C (60°F). Harden off before transplanting.
  3. Direct Sow: In warm climates, plant seeds directly outdoors after the last frost, 1 inch deep.
  4. Support Growth: Provide a sturdy trellis or fence to support vigorous vines and improve air circulation.
  5. Harvesting: Pick young luffa (6–8 inches long) for cooking or allow gourds to fully mature and dry on the vine for sponges.

Uses:

  • Culinary: Young luffa gourds are edible and can be used like zucchini in stir-fries, curries, and soups.
  • Sponges: Mature, dried gourds can be peeled, cleaned, and cut into sponges for natural exfoliation, dishwashing, or household cleaning.
