Our Garlic Chives (also known as Chinese Leeks) offer the perfect culinary bridge between mild onion and savory garlic. These untreated heirloom seeds produce beautiful, flat-bladed greens with a delicate garlic punch. Unlike standard chives, these plants also produce edible, star-shaped white flowers that add a gourmet touch to any garden or plate.
Non-GMO Untreated Garlic Chives Heirloom Seeds
Genus: Allium tuberosum
Planting Instructions:
Sowing Depth: 1/4 inch
Spacing: 6 inches apart (or clumped in pots)
Germination: 14–21 days
Soil Type: Rich, well-drained soil; thrives with added compost
Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist; Garlic Chives prefer more moisture than traditional Oregano
Growth Habit: Perennial; reaches 18–24 inches in height; forms attractive, slowly expanding clumps
Harvesting Tips:
Begin harvesting once the leaves reach about 6 inches in length.
Cut the outer leaves from the base (about 1–2 inches above the soil) to allow the center to continue growing.
Don't forget the flowers! Harvest the flower stalks when the buds are just about to open for a crunchy, garlicky treat.
Culinary Uses:
Garlic Chives are a staple in Asian cuisine and a versatile powerhouse for:
Stir-fries & Dumplings: A classic ingredient for pork or vegetable fillings.
Compound Butters: Mix with softened butter for an incredible steak topping or bread spread.
Omelets & Scrambled Eggs: Adds a fresh, savory depth without the "burn" of raw garlic cloves.
Garnish: Finely snip over soups, baked potatoes, or salads.
Storage and Preservation:
Fresh: Best used immediately. If needed, wrap in a damp paper towel and store in a bag in the crisper drawer for up to 1 week.
Freezing: Chop the leaves and freeze them in ice cube trays with a little water or olive oil to preserve their bright flavor better than drying.
