Cucamelon (Also called Mouse Melon, Mexican Sour Gherkin)
Botanical Name: Melothria scabra
Cucamelon, an intriguing miniature fruit, offers a delightful fusion of cucumber and lemon lime flavors in a tiny package! Also known as Mouse Melon or Mexican Sour Gherkin, this vine produces an abundance of grape-sized fruits that resemble tiny watermelons.
Planting Instructions:
- Sowing: Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost date in your area, or sow directly in well-drained soil after the danger of frost has passed.
- Soil: Plant in rich, loamy soil with good drainage and full sun exposure.
- Spacing: Space seeds or seedlings 12 inches apart in rows or allow them to spread along a trellis or support structure.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season.
- Support: Provide support such as a trellis or fence for the vines to climb.
- Harvest: Harvest cucamelons when they reach grape-sized and firmness, typically 60-70 days after planting. They are best when crisp and slightly firm.
Growing Tips:
- Cucamelons are vigorous climbers; provide sturdy support for the vines to grow.
- Mulch around plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Pinch off the tendrils occasionally to encourage bushier growth.
- These small fruits are excellent for fresh eating, pickling, or adding to salads for a unique flavor and texture.
Storage: Store harvested cucamelons in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Alternatively, they can be pickled for longer storage.
